Special ABC Licenses Now Available for Local Art Galleries

While the new law took effect July 1, the actual registration process has just become available to interested art galleries. Fredeicksburg ABC Agent Matt Halphen advises interested galleries to fill out an online retail license form (#805-52) in order to apply for the 12 annual exemptions (one per month for one year). The cost is $100 per year, per gallery with a one-time $65 application fee.

The exemption is so new that there is not an option for the Annual Arts Venue Events License on the form.  Agent Halphen offers the following instructions:  "under establishment type (question #16), select 'Other' and write in 'Annual Arts Venue Events License.'

Registration questions should be directed to Agent Halphen at (540) 322-5440 or Jama Smith, ABC Richmond Records Management and Licensing Department at (804) 213-4577.  The Fredericksburg Arts Commission and Assistant City Attorney Rob Eckstrom were among the groups statewide lobbying the General Assembly for the change.

FAC Announces First Friday Trolley

The Fredericksburg Arts Commission (FAC) is pleased to announce the launch of the First Friday Trolley, a free public transportation service connecting the network of galleries, restaurants, and other business that host art openings and related events on the first Friday of every month in downtown Fredericksburg.  Funded by FAC and operated by Trolley Tours of Fredericksburg, the service consists of two trolley cars that will run a "circulator" route during First Fridays from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Each designated stop is located no further than two blocks away from the surrounding galleries. Particular attention has been taken to include galleries that are more difficult to walk to along the Sophia Street, Lafayette Boulevard, and William Street corridors. Additional stops are located in surrounding residential areas to encourage greater participation in First Friday.

The service will make its debut on Friday, February 7, and will be available for a three-month trial period, which will be extended on the basis of ridership.

The First Friday Trolley was initiated in response to requests of those who participated in FAC’s 2013 online survey regarding art opportunities in Fredericksburg. For additional information, contact Fredericksburg Arts Commission Chair, Seth Casana, at (412) 608-3679.
